The botanic garden

The current botanical garden of the pharmacy department of Angers
was created before 1890 near the School of Medicine and Pharmacy,
and
at that time, it received a large number of plants from the school of botany.
It is organized in 32 planting beds, where the plants are classified by families and labeled.
It also includes an arboretum and a greenhouse.
It is open Monday to Friday from 8h to 12h and from 14h to 16h.

It is labeled 'Jardin botanique de France' and contains today more than 2000 species.
Like all botanical gardens, it fulfills missions of
- study and conservation of plants,
- teaching tools for systematic botany and phytotherapy,

- pleasure garden.

The botanic garden has a seedbank that can be visited on request.
This seedbank is maintained with a huge labour of love.
It is absolutely essential to renew each year the seedlings of annuals and some others,
and thus fulfill the mission of conservation and maintenance of the Faculty of Pharmacy botanical garden.
Each year, thousands of different seeds are harvested in the garden, the arboretum and the greenhouse.
After drying, they are sieved, sorted and classified.
A small amount is stored in small paper bags for next year's seedlings, and the rest in glass jars.
Students and visitors can discover the diversity of all these seeds, some of which are shown on these pages.
In addition to this educational aspect, the seedbank is also a resource for botanic gardens around the world.
Regularly, seeds are listed in a catalogue (Index seminum), and sent to more than 200 other botanical gardens,
to organize the numerous seed exchanges and maintain and complete the plant collections.

Botanists of the garden are consulted by the poison control center to identify seeds in case of intoxication.
